I was chatting to a mate who works in China in advertising and we were talking about Chinese teens and technology. He was amazed at how ‘geeky’ Chinese youth are, as they see it as a means of self expression for their entire generation. Culturally, mobile technology represents a symbol of progress and access to global youth culture. The Beijing Olympics certainly helped open the eyes of Chinese youth to the fact that western youth are interested and engaged in Chinese and eastern culture. Emotionally, a lonely ‘one child’ generation are able to express themselves for the first time in communist China and able to connect with the 300million Chinese youth. The way Chinese youth embrace social media platforms will be interesting as they break free from the generational shackles of conforming to the status quo. I believe we’ll see Chinese youth embracing new forms of creativity and a renaissance in fresh Eastern thinking.
